Description
Relief carving is the art of making shallow cuts into the two dimensional surface of a board in a way that creates a sense of the third dimension. It can be used to produce simple decorative plaques and signs or to enhance furniture and paneling with elaborate patterns. You will learn to manipulate shadow and light through the use of undercuts and subtle changes in the depth of cut. The first half of the class will consist of practice on basic patterns and also a simplified approach to incised letter carving. In the last three sessions, you will work on a subject of their own choosing with the advice and approval of the instructor.
