NYS Artist Opportunity Survey Results

We are excited to share with you a major victory – the NYS Artist Opportunity Survey is complete and ready to be shared. What started as a simple question – what do our artists need to thrive – turned into an incredible collaboration, pilot project and a valuable resource for the field.

Building a survey like this has been a major goal for the Arts Center for years. We finally had the time, resources and talent to take it on.

Our first step was to connect with Creative Rebuild NY to develop a survey that could “layer” on the important work they contributed to the field. CRNY agreed to work with us, and in doing so, the demographic information we collected integrates with their data. Then, we reach out to our good friends at ACE! Upstate Alliance for the Creative Economy and CREATE Council on the Arts to build a survey that would investigate many concerns our field faces: workspace, housing, funding, and professional development. Next, we wanted to frame this survey as a pilot so that it had the potential to be a state-wide tool, and Arts NYS has stepped in as its potential state-wide partner. Finally, we knew we needed a great tool so we turned to the Siena College Research Institute who built the survey and the searchable report.

We are very proud of this work. We live in a data-driven world and in an era in which arts funding is perilous, working with proven facts substantiate our position. We see this as a pilot – and are building a document of recommendations for future state-wide implementation. With that, we are happy to hear your feedback. Email Liz Reiss directly – this has been her project and one she wants to get right.
